THE RETURN OF MANGAUNG'S BIGGEST FESTIVAL in 2022

Macufe, which was established by the provincial government in 1997, is one of the largest festivals in Africa. The festival showcases arts, culture, and various sports disciplines.

The Free State Department of Sports, Arts and Culture has announced that Mangaung Arts and Cultural Festival (Macufe), will be making its return in 2022 having seen a two-year absence as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak which has affected the whole world for over a year. In 2021 the idea of having a virtual Macufe never materialized as planned by the department. The Free State premier SiSi Ntombela has made it clear that the 2022 version of Macufe will take place this year as it forms part of her plans for the province in the year 2022.

Every year in the early days of October, Mangaung hosts the Macufe African Cultural Festival which lasts for 10 days of gives local and international talents a time to showcase what they are capable of. The event includes different musical styles such as jazz, gospel, kwaito, rock, and R&B to name a few. Over the years the artists have included the likes of Brandy, Lady Zamar, and Tiwa Savage. Spectators from all over the world visit Bloemfontein, South Africa for the event which has seen over 140 000 spectators at recent events.

The premier revealed that the Free State provincial government extended some grants to local artists and athletes in the aim of trying to help alleviate the challenges they faced during the Covid-19 pandemic. They have given 692 artists R5 000 as part of the Covid-19 relief fund, 342 athletes also received R8 000 each as part of their relief intervention measure. She further added that her government's efforts in delivering a cultural value will be strengthened through the construction and renovation of indoor sport centers in areas across the province, and arts centers.
