Msaki wants to be involved in every part of the album
as a vocalist, songwriter, poet and visual artists. She is unconcerned with juggling
everything, no matter how difficult it may be.
“as a black woman, we’re moms, we work, we own
businesses and we have friends, so juggling is nothing new to us. But above
all, I wanted to keep my work’s integrity, thus I’m interested in all aspects
of creation. I want to be able to live a full life as a creator, so when it’s
time to cooperate. I know how to let go and not attempt to control everything. But
with everything else, I want to be a part of it because I know exactly what I want.”
Some of the songs on the album, such as statues and
born in a taxi (written by Neo Muyanga, one of the political and social instability
that has engulfed south Africa in recent years.
When she was writing this album, she had a lot in her
mind, including the Marikana Massacre and the surge in gender-based violence.
Msaki understands the struggles that black working
class women in South Africa face and she thought that her music needed to
express that. Even though making music about police brutally and GBV in south Africa
is difficult, she believes it is vital because it is reality that many people
face.
On her other album platinum heart beating, she teamed
with some of South Africa’s best musicians, Sun-El Musician, who is also a
co-producer on the album, Black Motion, Kabza and Oskido are just a handful of
the artists she has on board.
Sun-EL with their popular song Ubomi Abumanga, was one of them with whom she had previously
collaborated,
She claims that incorporating electronic house music
into her record came effortlessly as a result of her previous collaborations
with artists in the genre.
She explains. “I think it’s time the courteous thing
to do when you do something nice for someone and they return the favor.” They offered
to work with me since they found out my record was coming out, after partnering
with a lot of electronic houses musicians.
“And I never imagined I’d be working with Oskido who
is a legend in his own right, but I’m interested in broadening the scope of
electronic dance music, which where is a lot of younger people come in, and I wanted
to cover the range of possibilities in the genre.”
She wasn’t afraid of stepping into electronic music because
she is familiar with the genre.
