Senzo Meyiwa murder trial defence lawyer, Advocate Malesela Teffo got released on bail this past Friday. The advocate was granted a bail of R10 000 after being dramatically arrested after court proceedings at the Senzo Meyiwa trial concluded on Thursday at the Pretoria High Court.

His arrest was after he failed to appear before the Hillbrow Magistrate's Court in relation to charges of assault and trespassing on the 27th January, the day on which the court also issued a warrant of arrest. The accused's lawyer, Tshepo Thobane said that Teffo had Covid-19 which resulted in him not attending the course by then and this was communicated to the investigating officer and the prosecutor.

State prosecutor Mzwandile Nkabinde never opposed the bail application as he said Teffo's release was in the best interest of justice. The prosecutor first proposed a bail amount of R5 000, which Thobane (Teffo's lawyer) asked to be reduced to R4 000. The presiding officer in his ruling stated that since it wasn't Teffo's first time absconding from court, he then increased the bail amount to R10 000.

The defence advocate maintained their innocence and claimed that his arrest was a result of political interference. This follows his claims that Bheki Cele was behind his arrest.
