With his 2021 album, Subconsciously, Black Coffee won his first-ever Grammy award at the 2022 Grammys, in the category of the best dance/electronic album.

This is the first time a producer from South Africa has won or been nominated in this category. "I want to thank God for the gift of music and being able to share it with the world and cure some souls," the musician stated as he took the stage in a smart white suit during the premiere event. He also mentioned that the young man on stage with him was his first-born son, Esona and that he has five more children back in Johannesburg who he plans to bring to future ceremonies.

In his address, Black Coffee congratulated his record partners, including Pharrell and David Guetta, who "believed in working with a lesser artist like myself and believing me and trusting my ear," according to Black Coffee. Sabrina Claudio, Usher, and Diplo are among the other musicians included on Subconsciously.

"It was extremely crucial for me to make this record accessible to as many people as possible when I was working on it," Black Coffee told Billboard about his nomination. "The album explores a variety of sounds and styles while remaining faithful to my background. I wanted to create an album that could be enjoyed not only in the car or at a club, but also when cleaning the house, going through a difficult period, and everything in between. It pushes boundaries, and I believe that's where the appeal rests in the end."

RÜFÜS DU SOL took home the prize for best dance/electronic recording for their single "Alive," while Black Coffee was one of the night's two winners in the best dance/electronic category.
